참, 반가운 글입니다...좀 더 길게 자세하게 말씀을 남겨주었더라면 더 좋았을 텐데...

고견이라고는 뭐하고,,평소에 생각하는 점들을 남겨봅니다.

...서바스를 처음 알게되고 설레이는 마음으로 회원이 되고 시간이 조금씩 지나면서 서바스에 관한 가치관의 혼란을 다양한 강도로 겪어보지 않은 사람이 없을 거 라는 생각을 했습니다.

서바스의 궁극적 목적 - peace-building -... 청소년기부터 심각하게 고민하기 시작하여 어른이 되어서도 해답을 찾기 힘드는 그 큰 모토에 대해 ...서바스에 가입만 하면 이상을 실현 시킬 수 있겠다는 기대감,,,아,! 그리고 여행을 통한 것이니까,,,일석이조가 되겠군!....이런,,,혼란기를 거쳐,,,몇번의 여행과 여러 서바스인들과의 만남 그리고, 그 사람들로부터 다양한 영향을 주고 받으며,,,지금 이 시간에 와 있는 나의 모습...이런 것들이 아마도 대부분의 서바스인들의 모습이 아닐까 생각합니다. 그 와중에서 “서바스를 통한 공짜 여행” 이라는 구절은 제일로 제 맘을 괴롭혔던 문구였습니다. 이 세상에 공짜가 정말 있는가요?

서바스를 통한 여행의 진정한 의미에는 공짜보다는 평소에 만나기 힘든 사람, 접하기 힘든 문화 이런 것 들을 서바스라는 넷워크를 활용하여 접촉해보고 그 작은 접촉으로 인해 이데올로기를 넘어서서 서로 배려하며 작은 관계를 맺어나가는 것, 탈 정치적으로 인간에게 다가설수 있는 기초를 만드는 것...단지, 호스트로서 그리고 여행자로서 서로에게 이틀밤 머무를 수 있는 잠자리가 생기고, 서로의 생각을 나눌 친구가 된다는 것....이런 소박한 것이 서바스의 이념이라고 듣고 읽은 저로서 생각하기엔 너무나 당혹스런 문구였습니다. 무전여행도 아닌데...

오직 관광을 목적으로 하는 외국 여행을 우리는 일년에 얼마나 자주 할수 있을까요? 밤을 세워가며 계획을 세우고 수정하기를 수번에 걸쳐 한 후에 서바스호스트를 찾는 몇 일 간에 걸친 컨텍과정을 거쳐 새로운 감탄을 위한 여행에 나서며,,과연 어떤 서바스 호스트를 만나 어떤 이야기를 하고 무얼보며, 무엇을 감탄하고 돌아올까라는 기대에 설레이는,,,이런 것이 서바스 여행이 아닌가요? 그리고 다른 나라로 여행을 갈 수는 없지만 본인이 가보지 못한 미지의 세계에서 온 미지의 서바스인을 본인 집에 모시고, 사는 모습 그대로 보여주며, 그 나라 이야기도 듣고, 서로 좋아하는 걸 털어놓고 이야기 하고, ,,,이러한 정서공유를 통해 정도 생기고,,,,,글쎄요...궁극적인 ....평화!,,,평화!,,,,,,너무나도 큰 ,,,평화,,하지만,,,,,눈에 보이지 않는 인간대 인간의 서바스 활동으로 결국에는 이루어질 수 있는 .......그런 평화를,,,,, 부분적인 일이지만, 제가 개인적으로 느꼈던 혼란이었습니다...

1...........서바스에 대한 다양한 자료를 찾지 못했다는 점은 아쉽군요..;

저도 잘 알지는 못하지만, 소위 선진국에서는 서바스활동의 근간이 되는 것이 회원 개개인의 오래된 사회활동이 밑바탕이 되는 것 같습니다.. 우린 그런 저변이 많이 부족한 것 같죠!?

서바스에서는 그런 활동을 하는 사람들과의 인적교류, 그리고 인적교류의 작은 보탬이 되고자, 홈스테이를 제공하는 정책을 펼쳐왔다고 알고 있습니다. 즉, 개인 혹은 서바스를 대표해서 여러 사회단체와 협력을 이루어 다양한 활동을 함으로써 인권, 세계평화등에 기여 할 수 있다는 소박한 실천에서부터 시작한 오랜 시간에 걸친 활동이 개개인의 서바스에 대한 신념, 그리고 말없는 실천을 낳아왔다고 생각됩니다..

Many hosts in Servas Britain are involved in activities concerned with refugees, and help to publicise the problems faced by refugees during Refugee Week, which this year was from 15th?20th June. The aim of Refugee Week is to remember and celebrate the enormous contributions made to Britain over time by refugees in many fields ? including science, medicine, education and the arts. Even our contemporaries bear witness to this ? those who feature in the popular TV programme 'Who Do You Think You Are?' often discover that their ancestors came to the UK as refugees. However, Refugee Week also focuses on those who are still seeking asylum from conflict and injustice today. The 'Ice and Fire' Theatre group, who performed at Servas Britain's AGM weekend, give performances on human rights issues throughout the UK. You can find details of these on Ice and Fire's website.

'Women to Women for Peace' is a network of women whose work is about bridge-building between people from countries which have contrasting, and often conflicting, political, philosophical, cultural and religious approaches.

We develop and maintain friendships across cultural divides, creating opportunities for communication and educational exchanges. We believe that by building friendships between women, we learn to understand one another and value our differences. We arrange reciprocal visits between people from the United Kingdom and around the world.

Following on directly from Bruce Kent’s inspiring talks at the Servas Britain AGM, two events are being organised by Servas hosts for later in the year. The first of these ? a visit to the peace exhibitions at the northern section of the Imperial War Museum in Salford ? will be on 7th November (contact Barbara Binns (09/364) for more details). The second will be a ‘peace walk’ in London on 11th October ? contact Sue Penny (09/164) for information. More details will be posted on the peace page and in the newsletter nearer the time.

Many Servas members are also members of the human rights organisation Amnesty International, and will know of the excellent events, including exhibitions, films and lectures, which take place regularly at the Human Rights Action Centre in London and at other venues. Many of these events are free and open to non-members. In May Wangari Maathai gave an inspiring talk about her tree-planting campaign in her native Kenya by a scheme. Currently there is a season of Iranian films. See the Amnesty web-site events page for more information.

Jeffrey Gale (host 09/131) is involved in the World Peace Gardens network. He says: "Would any Servas Member like to designate a garden or potential garden as a World Peace Garden with our special logo? Any garden is eligible for designation, but we're particularly interested in school or college gardens or public parks. The idea of the network is to combine permacultural design principles of perennial biodiverse horticulture, orchards and woodlands with peace activism."

Chris Green (host 09/394) is involved in peace-building as Executive Director of the White Ribbon Campaign UK. Wearing the White Ribbon is a commitment never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. The campaign aims to motivate men to become active in anti-domestic abuse campaigning. It is entirely volunteer-run and, as well as distributing ribbons and pledge cards, it carries out education and awareness raising work in schools and colleges. It has attracted high-profile support, including that of Paolo Maldini, the captain of the Italian national football team. For more information see the White Ribbon Campaign website.

YMCA INTERNATIONAL CAMP COUNSELORS PROGRAM

ICCP works to create a global community for American campers. They believe that a multicultural staff is the best way to teach appreciation and respect for different viewpoints. Servas works with ICCP to provide homestays for international counselors. In the summer of 2005, US Servas was asked to give presentations on our international homestay programs at the YMCA ICCP's orientation sessions in Arcata office.

Through visiting with Americans, international camp counselors have the opportunity to explore American culture- learn more about US politics, professions, pastimes, worship, peace and social justice movements firsthand!

INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION (IIE)

IIE broadens the outlook of future leaders through academic and professional exchange that strengthens their ability to think and act on a cooperative basis. They believe exchange among people of different cultures is a critical means for transferring knowledge and skills across borders and preparing a new generation of global citizens. US Servas is working with the IIE headquarters in Arcata to provide day-hosting opportunities for Fulbright students, giving them a chance to learn about American culture and daily life in New York.

GLOBAL EXCHANGE

Global Exchange is an international human rights organization dedicated to promoting environmental, political and social justice. Their Bike Aid program is an educational cross-country bicycle tour that engages participants in a critical understanding of the world and how they relate to it. Part of the program includes linking up with local people and community organizations. Last year, Servas helped Global Exchange by providing home hosts for some of their participants.

TravelingEd

TravelingEd increases international awareness in students through their classroom-learning environment. TravelingEd and US Servas have partnered to bring the benefits of cross-cultural exchange with host families to children in the classroom. The Koppel family has become Servas travelers and will be meeting with families from the worldwide Servas network. International studies lesson plans that TravelingEd creates will be augmented with the Koppel’s homestay experiences that allow an inside look at a local culture through its people. THE NY MIDDLE EAST PEACE QUILT COALITION

The NY Middle East Peace Quilt Coalition, Chaired by US Servas, is a 20-member Coalition of community groups and peace/social justice organizations from throughout New York City. US Servas worked together with these groups from January 2003-September 2003 to organize the New York Middle East Peace Quilt Project, a series of events and exhibits around the Middle East Peace Quilt aimed at bringing diverse communities together to hear each other’s stories and build vital neighborhood relationships. The Middle East Peace Quilt is an international community art project coordinated by a Servas member, together with over 300 Palestinians, Jews and others mostly from North America.

A diverse coalition comprised of community groups and peace and coexistence organizations from Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx has organized and supported this project.

For more than 50 years, United States Servas has been bringing hosts and travelers together. A place to stay, friendship to begin, ideas to be exchanged, cultures to be shared, and world peace one conversation at a time: these are the reasons why you are invited join us.

2........입회에 탈퇴에 관한,,,,,,;

어떤, 강제규정을 둔다는 것은 자유 보다는 더 큰 억압을 낳을 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다. 이윤을 목적으로 하지도 않고, 사실,,입회와 탈퇴 그리고 회원수 증가에 너무 많은 노력을 소비할 필요가 있을까요? 다른 일도 많은데...하지만 체계적인 관리는 꼭 필요하겠죠?

3.........친목회....;

친목이 주 인가? 세계평화를 위한 활동이 주 인가?

그렇다면 친목도모는 세계평화를 위해 불필요 한가? 필요한가?....

맘 속으로 몇 번씩 생각해 보지 않은 이가 없었던 그런 질문이 아닌가 생각합니다.

아마도 한국 서바스의 규모가 현재의 것으로 되기 전에는 약 오십여명 이하의 가족 같은 모임이었고, 가족 같다는 것은 작든 크든 큰 충돌이 없는 친교가 이루어 졌던 모임이 아니었나 생각됩니다. 하지만, 조직이 커지고, 매년, 전국대회를 비롯한 지부별 특색행사가 진행되다보니,,한국인 특유의 모임성격이 그대로 드러나, 실용적인 사고를 갖고 있는 분들에게 이해되지 않는 모습을 보인 것 또한 사실이고, 평회원으로부터 그것에 대한 지적을 받아,,개선되었고, 앞으로도 개선되어지고 있는 사안이 아닌가 생각됩니다...

하지만, 사람과 사람의 만남에는 미소, 대화 , 접촉, 그리고 느낌을 통한 것들이 있지 않습니까?

친목회 행사는 그 회의 주된 목적에 맞는 주된 업무를 열심히 하고서, 휴식과 더불어 재충전과 회원상호간의 친교를 위해 모임을 갖는 것이라고 생각합니다..그런데,,,맘속으로 생각하길,,,난 평화를 위해, 그리고 이 서바스를 위해 평소에 별로 한 것도 없는 데,,,정기적으로 모임을 갖고 행사를 한다고 가보니,,세계평화란 모토와 실천은 눈에 보이지 않고, 회운영에 관한 회의, 개인적으로 시간을 내어서 취미활동으로도 충분히 할 수 있는 일반적인 활동(모두가 다 그렇다는 것은 아님)으로 행사를 진행한다고 하니,,,맘속으로 내가 과연 생산적인 생활을 하는 걸까? 왜 내가 이회에 와서 이리저리 다니고 있는 걸까? ,,,,,, 아마 이런,,,혼란스런 생각들을 한두번씩은 다 해보지 않았을 까요?

하지만,,,저는 꼭 한가지 서양보다 우리 동양,,,그중에서 한국인이 갖고 있는 중요하고 좋은 성품이 바로 정 이라고 생각합니다...윤영범님도 참,,정 많은 분인 것 같다는 인상을 받았습니다.. 춘추가 어떻게 되는 지 잘 모르겠으나, 나이, 학번, 군대, 지역감정 이게 다 무슨 소용입니까? 서로 서로 에게 배울 점이 있고, 서로를 받아들일 느낌을 받았다는... 조건 없는 정을 주고 받을 수 있는 현존하는 가장 가능성이 많은 민족이 우리국민들 아닐까요? 그래서 전 우리들이 가진,,,알게 모르게 쑤셔 넣어놓고 있던 이 정이 라는 정서가 언젠가는 아니 이미 벌써 여러 군데서,,여러 분들에게서 꺼집어 내어 졌다는 사실이 중요하더이다...

덧붙이자면,,,영종도 공항에 아직도 이런 글 이 붙어있는지 모르겠는데,,,‘DYNAMIC KOREA’말입니다..이젠,,,'SURE KOREA'로 바꿔야 할 시점이 아닌가 생각합니다...

우리의 아주 특별한 정서인 그 정이라는 것 정말 잘 살리면서 서로를 배려하고 큰 평화는 아니지만 조그만 평화라도 쟁취할 수 있는 작디작은 활동들을 하나라도 찾아보려고 노력하는 그런 작은 모임들이 많이 많이 생긴다면,,,,우리가 굳이 이게 친목이니,,,아니네,,,라고 말할 필요도 없다고 생각되는군요...하지만, 좀 확실해야 되지 않을 까요? ‘SURE KOREA,,,SURE SERVAS’가 되어야 하지 않을까요?.....일례로 전국적인 큰 행사가 있으면,,가장 기본적인 잠자리, 식사..이 문제 만큼은 개개인을 제대로 존중하고 배려해주는 형태가 되어야 하지 않을까 생각합니다...

4......... 서바스인의 의무,,?;

이런 질문을 던질 수 있는 자체가 아직은 넘치는 에너지가 있다는 사실이 아닐까요?

서바스인의 의무는 설립취지에 다 있다고 생각되는 군요. 다만 의무의 이행이 호스트와 여행을 통한 것이 서바스의 주된 색깔이라고 생각합니다. 다른 단체와 제일 큰 다른 점이 여행넷트워크를 이루고 있다는 것이며, 그 이유는 평화추구를 위한 활동에 그 뿌리를 두고 있다고 하겠죠...그저,,여행만이 목적이 아니라는 그죠,,특히 젊은이들이 평화를 구현하는 방법을 배우기 위해 일하며, 공부하며, 여행하는 프로그램(work-study-travel program)을 만들어 행하여 왔으며, 그 전통은 지금도 계속되고 있다고 생각합니다. 실예로 런던에 가있는 성재위회원님의 따님같은 경우가 바로 이런 경우가 아닌가 생각됩니다......그리고, 전세계 회원들 중에는 다양한 종류의 사회 단체에 가입하여 오랫동안 활동을 해오고 있는 회원이 많은 것으로 알고 있습니다. 이것 모두가 'peace-building'을 위한 것이라고 생각합니다...그리고 이것을 위한 여러 가지 프로그램이나 경험, 서비스 같은 것들을 여타 사회단체, 그리고 전세계인과 공유하고 계속해서 축적해 나가는 것이 진정한 서바스 활동이며 의무라고 생각합니다...

근데,,이 거창한 것들을 어떻게 해나가죠? 어떻게 시작을 해야하죠? 저도 고민을 좀 했답니다... 거창하게 의무를 이행하기에도 뭐하고, 그저 있기에 마음 한 구석이 찜찜하고,,도대체 평화건설을 위해 뭘 해야하나? 서바스인은 호스트 잘하고, 여행 잘하면 되는가?,,,개인이 찾아야하는 해답은 맞는 것 같은데,,,한국서바스를 이끌어 가는 본부에서도 평화를 위한 뚜렷한 활동이 없으니,,,,그래요...많은 새로운 만남은 많았지만, 분명히 실천하는 뭔가가 부족했기에 이런 저런 생각을 많이 하게 되지 않았나 생각합니다...개개인이 찾고, 본부에서도 찾고, 임계질량에 도달할 때 까지 말보다는 찾아서 실천하는 것이 컴퓨터앞에 앉아있는 것 보다 더 나은 것 같다고 생각합니다...

제가 어렸을 때 아버지께서 매일 학교로(영어교사였음) 출근 하시는 모습은 바로 자전거 뒷좌석에 도시락을 끼우고 덜컹 덜컹 패달을 밟아 가시는 것이었습니다. 한 여름날 더위에 못이겨 하는 저를 어린이용 의자에 태우고서 삼십분 넘게 보뚝길을 따라 패달을 밟아 갔던 곳이 포항의 송도해수욕장 이었습니다..,,이젠 몇 년 전부터 제가 자전거를 타고 도시락은 아니지만, 가끔,,아내가 해주는 주먹밥을 배낭에 넣고서 학교로 출근을 합니다...자전거를 타면 우선, 기분이 상쾌해지고, 정신이 맑아지는 느낌이어서 참 좋았습니다. 먼 길을 쉬엄 쉬엄 이것 저것 자세히 봐 가면서 멀리 멀리 까지 가서 내가 이 세상에 하고 싶은 말들을 사진으로 만들어도 보고,,..이런 것들이 좋아 지금까지 해오고 있으며,,,,,다른 분들에게도 이런 페달질을 전염시키고 싶더군요..거창한 모토도 없이 ,,,,자전거가 좋다는 건 국가에서 방송에서 너무나도 잘 홍보를 해주니 말입니다....중요한 것은 그런 좋은 것을 국민모두가 서바스인 모두가 하게 할 수 있을 까? 하는 것인데,,,,더욱 중요한 것은 결과를 미리 점치기 전에 임계질량(CRITICAL MASS ; 어떠한 변화를 끌어내기에 필요한 양)에 다다를 때 까지 꾸준히 열심히 실천해 나가는 것이라고 생각합니다....서바스인의 의무도 마찬가지라 생각됩니다.. 너무 무거운 평화가 아닌 가벼운 평화 이더라도,,,그 평화를 위해 뭔가 작은 실천을 해보는 것,,,,꾸준히,,천천히 말입니다....!

어떻게 보면 쉽게 풀어낼 수 있는 이야기를 이렇게 글로 표현하고자하니 힘드네요. 하지만, 이런 질문을 던진 현명한 한 분의 한국 서바스인이 있기에, 각기 다른 서바스 인 마음 하나 하나를 새롭게 알수 있게되는 좋은 기회가 아닌가 생각됩니다...

너무 길고 미흡하며 여물지 못한 글이어서 죄송하며, 마지막으로,,,자신이 선택한 이데올로기를 위해 한 평생을 바치며, 마음 속 아름다운 집 한 채 짓기 위해 사랑도 가족도 자신의 한 평생까지도 희생한 사람의 이야기를 담은 손석춘씨의 ‘아름다운 집’이라는 책을 읽어 보셨는지요?...혹,,아직이라면 추천해 봅니다....
