Some feedback for the Servas Korea (Daegu, 28/5/14)

I believe people might be much more interested in contacting hosts in Korea if the information supplied were more interesting. Everyone in the list seems pretty much alike, with no significant variety in the interests people have, or any information about the areas they live in. You might take the UK or the Japan list as examples of attractive lists.

The other suggestion concerns the 2 night rule. It was mainly implemented to ensure a meaningful level of communication between guest and host, for which 2 nights is the minimum.

However, that does not mean a host cannot invite a guest to extend their stay  by a further night or two.  

I myself have had many experiences around the world of hosts quite willing to extend by a night or two, whereas here in Korea it seems pretty much ‘taboo’ to do so, though I stayed with your National Secretary for three nights: many thanks, Mr. Huh! Especially as he took me to see one of Korea’s foremost temples notable for traditional learning,  I dubbed him Korea’s ‘Laozi’…

My experiences staying with hosts here have been very positive. Korean hosts are exceptionally friendly and, in my case at least, went out of their way to take me to the places I wanted to see…not to mention the great meals, traditional rice wine, and stimulating conversations they shared with me.  

In particular, I’d like to mention the host who got the ball rolling, Mr. Choi Byungwan, Vice-National Secretary from Seoul, and his wife, who provided an excellent introduction to your capital city, and Mr. Joo Suseok and family, from Geongju City.   

Mr. Joo, a high school teacher and counsellor, arranged for me to address the entire student body of 500 boys – very fruitful for both the students and myself. As an educationist, I’m always keen to familiarize myself with schooling around the world and share my own knowledge with others.

Bravo Servas Korea!

1. 좀더 좋은 호스트 정보가 필요하다.    

호스트리스트를 보면 천편일률적이다.  사람은 다양한데 왜 유니크한 자기만의 인생 이야기를 여기서는 찾아볼 수 없는 것일까? 우리 집의 위치, 특색, 취미나 성향 같은 것이 다양하게 소개된 호스트리스트가 되었으면 좋겠다. (실제로 다른 나라 호스트리스트는 개인 광고 같음)

2. 서바스의 기본룰에 충실했으면 한다.    

이틀 밤을 호스트의 기본으로, 이튿날 저녁은 트래블러가 요리하든지 외식을 하든지, 작은 선물 이지만 정성스런 교환, 호스트가 끝난 후 감사 메일이나 피드백 또는 리포트 제출 등 기본 룰이 중요하다. (실제로 이번 여행에서 하룻밤의 호스트를 거절하기도 했다)

3. 이번 여행에서 반은 서바스 호스트로, 반은 카우치서핑을 경험했다.  

서울의 최병완 부회장 호스트로 아름다운 서울을 경험했고, 대구에서는 해인사, 대장경, 약령시장과 서문시장을 그리고 경주에서는 주 수석님의 호스트로 불국사와 양동마을, 통도사까지 멋진 경험을 시켜주신 한국의 호스트는 대단하다고 평가 하셨다.

특히 교육자로서 주 수석님의 고등학교에서 5백명을 모아놓고 인생의 장래, 또래의 영국 교육 현실, 네팔과 영국과 한국의 비교 등 아주 값진 경험을 시켜주신 서바스 호스트 칭찬에도 인색지 않았다.

한국 서바스의 모든 호스트들이 한 번쯤 새겨 들어야 할 과제와 칭찬을 성찰하는 기회가 되었으면 한다.
