Dear Mr. KIM,
³²ºÎÀÌŸ®
In May, I wrote about a 1912 edition of "Baedeker's Southern Italy," whereupon a faithful reader in New Bern, NC, kindly sent another of the red-cloth-covered guidebooks my way, "Baedeker's Great Britain."

This book was published in 1906, when the United Kingdom was ruled by Edward VII, great-grandfather to the current queen. The first chapters deal with getting to and around Great Britain, and a section on trans-Atlantic sailings offers insight into early 20th-century cruising. Here's the advice Baedeker gave to steamship passengers:

"Passengers should pack clothing and other necessaries for the voyage in small flat boxes, such as can lie easily in the cabin." Bulky luggage would be stowed away in the ship's hold, the book warned.

"Dress for the voyage should be of a plain and serviceable description, and it is advisable, even in midsummer, to be provided with warm clothing. Ladies should not forget a thick veil."

"A deck-chair, which may be purchased or hired at the dock or on the steamer before sailing, is a luxury that may almost be called a [necessity]. Bought chairs should be distinctly marked with the owner's name or initials and may be left in charge of the steamship company's agents until the return journey."
The book lists 11 lines that offered trans-Atlantic sailings in those days, along with the rates for one-way passages. If you sailed for England on Cunard Line from New York or Boston, you'd have paid $42.50 to $175 for your cabin, according to the guide. Return tickets were reduced by 10 percent.

Once in Great Britain, travelers who opted to travel by rail could purchase lunch or teatime baskets at the train station before boarding. In winter, foot-warmers were provided.

Exploring the countryside on foot -- long a favorite British hobby -- is also addressed, as Baedeker says that "the pedestrian is unquestionably the most independent of travelers." For a short tour, walkers were advised to bring along a couple of flannel shirts, a pair of worsted stockings, slippers, a waterproof jacket, a "stout" umbrella and "strong and well-tried boots."

Visitors who craved more cosmopolitan offerings could head straight to London, where they could attend a play at one of 30 West End theaters or take in a performance at a music hall. Those seeking concerts of "high-class" music were directed to the Royal Albert Hall and other similarly worthy venues.

A hundred years later, London is a hugely popular destination for Americans and Canadians, and my favorite big city. A great way to take it all in is with an independent air-and-hotel package. These offer group discounts on air and hotel, some guided sightseeing and plenty of time to explore on your own. Often, extras such as museum passes, public transportation passes or theater tickets are thrown into the deal. Click here to view our independent packages in London.

If you'd like to see more of Great Britain, I recommend an escorted tour. Click here to see a list of itineraries in the British Isles.

And, those who love spending days at sea can still book a trans-Atlantic cruise from New York to London, aboard Cunard's new Queen Mary 2. Click here to see a list of departures. The bad news is that fares have gone up a tad over the past 100 years. The good news: Deck chairs are plentiful and free.

Here are this week's Top 10 lists, one consisting of our favorite Europe & Great Britain tours and the other highlighting our picks for the rest of the world. All prices are per person, based on double occupancy, and subject to availability.
