Servas holds meeting in Korea

Some 90 members of the local branch of Servas International, Servas Korea, held their annual election at the Blue One Resort in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, on Saturday and Sunday.

With more Koreans choosing to study and work abroad, Servas International has become a strong focus among the Korean and expat community.

Servas is an international, non-governmental, multicultural peace association run by volunteers in over 100 countries. Founded in 1949 by Bob Luitweiler as a peace movement, Servas International is anon-profit organization working to build understanding, tolerance and world peace.

Servas means “to serve,” in the sense of “serve peace,” in the language Esperanto. The organization was originally called “Peacebuilders.”

It operates through a network of hosts around the world who are interested in opening their doors to travelers, and through open-minded travelers who want to know the countries they visit from within.

Travelers and hosts are usually interviewed when they apply to join the organization according to branch (member country) practice; travelers write a selfintroduction on a special form valid for one year, that is shown to hosts upon arrival.

The Korean chapter has been in operation since 1965 with members attending international conferences since the 1976 conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. The most recent being the August 2012, held in Piaski, Poland.

“We operate through a network of Servas hosts around the world who are interested in opening their doors to travelers, and of Servas travelers who want to get to know the heart of the countries they visit,” states the website.

“Servas helpers are members who support the goals of the organization in other ways, through leadership and communication or perhaps as a representative at the United Nations. Servas International has consultative status as a non-governmental organization with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, with representation at many of the U.N.’s hubs of activity.”

The organization’s activities may vary depending on the country, but they mostly consist of hosting and traveling (or both).

Unlike many other hospitality exchange networks, Servas requires that potential members be interviewed and approved.

Local members of Servas include a group of mountain bike enthusiasts who have toured the world experiencing global cycling events.

Another group recently completed a European tour visiting 31 countries including England, Portugal, Spain, Andorra, France, Monaco, Italy, Vatican, City, San Marino, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Czek Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Aland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Netherland, Luxembourg and Belgium.

Servas is private.

Host lists and other personal information about members are held instrict confidence, and can only be used by other Servas members.

YangHwang-il 2012-11-25 20:33	오랜만에 황인복님의 글을 대합니다. 우리 서바스에 대하여 국내의 영자신문 기사는 처음으로 봅니다. 사실 서바스는 국가간 자발적 민간교류가 핵심인데 국제화의 선두에 있는 코리아 타임즈 같은 신문이 일반 신문보다 더 관심을 갖고 취재해줘야 맞는 게 아닌가 생각해봅니다. 황인복님의 서바스를 알리려는 홍보노력, 수고하셨습니다.
